Power Yoga and Ashtanga. The info you need.

The differences between the two are simple Ashtanga is very structured with a set pattern of poses. However power on the other hand can be very different from teacher to teacher as there are no set patterns.

What is the same between these styles are they are very physically challenging and generally appeal to people who are fit and enjoy working out. Also there is less chanting and meditation within these styles then with other forms of Yoga.

Power Yoga

Getting involved this style of yoga is very easy. There are classes in every major city. There are also many DVDs and Books available, I will be listing my library or at least my 3 favourite DVDs and Books on a couple days. Right now I am just looking where online has the best prices for you and also a good reputation to make sure you get what you pay for. So check back soon for them.

Ashtanga Yoga

Ashtanga is an ideal style of yoga for home practitioners. Once you know the sequence of poses you just practice the same sequence all the time. That kind of structure makes Ashtanga preferable to Power yoga for home use.

This is the system of yoga that is taught by Sri K. Pattabhi Jois in the Ashtanga Yoga Research Institute in Mysore, India.

There are six main Ashtanga series that a student can go through at his or her own pace. The first series (called Yoga Chikitsa) has about 75 poses and takes about 1 and a half to 2 hours to get through.

The other 5 series within Ashtanga will be described in coming pages in more detail. They are listed here for you.

The second is called Nadi Shodana which means “nervous system purification”.

The remaining 4 advanced series are known collectively as Sthira Bhaga the meaning of which is “divine stability”.

Here I have included a very nicely done Ashtanga yoga video for you to see. I hope you enjoy it. My plan in 2008 is to produce several short videos to publish here on this site, sign up for our newsletter or rss feed to the left to be informed on when.

As for me I really enjoy both Power as well as Ashtanga yoga. Both are great for you and will defiantly benefit your health and life. Rememeber to bookmark us and check back soon, new pages are coming every day or so.
